Description
The story begins with early writings of the great hero King Arthur emerging to unify and lead his people, the Britons, to repel the Germanic invaders who took advantage of the turmoil and power vacuum in Britain after the Romans left in 410 C.E. after nearly 400 years of rule. This was the beginning of the Dark Ages, lasting 200 years. According to legend, King Arthur was born in Tintagel Castle in Tintagel, an area steeped in the legend of King Arthur, where you'll also find the cave known as Merlin's Cave and the ghostly statue Gallos. Many locations from the Arthurian Legend have claims found in the southwest of England, such as Glastonbury Abbey — Arthur and Guinevere's believed resting place, the Isle of Avalon (Glastonbury Tor), Amesbury Abbey (St Mary and St Melor church), and Camelot (Cadbury Castle). In Wales, you'll find the believed birthplace of Merlin at Dinas Emrys, where dragons selpt. And according to legend, whilst fleeing Anglo-Saxon invaders, King Vortigern attempted to build a castle here. It's the area where the legend of the dragon from the Welsh flag originates.
